- Healing From Spiritual Abuse Conference
Trinity Lutheran Church of Pleasanton and New College Berkeley
are hosting a conference on "Healing From Spiritual Abuse." It
will take place Saturday, February 15, 2003, 8:30 am - 5:00
pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1225 Hopyard Road in Pleasanton,
CA.
Spiritual Abuse can take many forms. But they happen when a
person who is in need of help, support, or greater spiritual
empowerment is instead weakened, undermined, and diminished by
clerical leadership that betrays its pastoral trust for its own
personal reasons and for the increase of its own power and
influence. Pastor Dave Beard, of Trinity is among a growing number
of concerned clergy and academics that recognize the serious
trauma suffered by those in spiritually abusive settings.
Nationally recognized authors Ken Blue, Dr. Ron Enroth, Dr.
Margaret Thaler-Singer and Jeff VanVonderen will lead the
conference. Counselors and prayer stations will be available
during the conference. A Healing Service will be held after the
conference.
Pricing is $50 for individuals and $80 for couples.
Scholarships are available. For more info, see

We are asking that you help inform survivors, their family members
and helping professionals about these two upcoming retreats in
Maine which feature an internationally recognized method of
working with trauma that is innovative and highly effective.
Kathy Amsden, the psychotherapist in Auburn,
Maine, who is arranging the program, tells me that interested
persons may be able to receive scholarship funds from their local
diocese to take part in this program BUT they must have this
information well in advance to make those applications. Please
pass along on any freinds, colleagues and/or e-mail lists that you
belong to as well as forward to any newsletters, church bulletins
or other publications, web sites or resources that may be helpful
in spreading the news.
"Restoration,
Reconciliation and Renewal: Healing Spiritual Trauma," a workshop
focused on healing for survivors of clergy abuse and their family
members, is scheduled Aug. 16-18 at St. Paul Retreat and
Conference Center, Augusta, Maine. Kate Hudgins, Ph.D.,
internationally known speaker and presenter on trauma and founder
of Therapeutic Spiral International, Charlottesville, Va., will
lead the program with a team of clinicians. Scholarships may be
available. More information is available by calling Katherine
Amsden at (207) 777-1508 or visiting
www.therapeuticspiral.org.
A training program for mental health
professionals and other helping professionals working with trauma
and abuse is scheduled from Sept. 6-8 at the Notre Dame Spiritual
Center in Alfred, Maine. The program, "Developmental Repair,"
focuses on innovative and safe uses of experiential therapy for in
individual and group settings. Mario Cossa, a registered drama
therapist and master trainer in psychodrama based in Keene, N.H.,
and other clinicians associated with Therapeutic Spiral
International, a non-profit organization based in Charlottesville,
Va., will instruct. More information is available by calling
Katherine Amsden at (207) 777-1508 or visiting
www.therapeuticspiral.org.
Dr. Hudgins' new book, "Experiential Treatment
for PTSD: The Therapeutic Spiral Model," has just been published
in June 2002 by Springer Publishing Company. It details the
holistic model that she developed and "road tested" in hundreds of
workshops from Israel and Northern Ireland to Turkey and South
Africa, consistently meeting with positive results. The book is
available on www.amazon.com and by order from Springer (www.springerpub.com)
and should be of interest to psychotherapists and helpers from
other disciplines.
Trainees and colleagues have taken the model to
survivors of the Columbine High School shootings and the World
Trade Center disaster. Dr. Hudgins has worked with hundreds of
survivors of abuse and trauma therough the years and is currently
working closely with a group of helping professionals in Maine to
develop treatment responses to the clergy abuse that has been
surfacing in the news.
I've personally been part of TSI's training and
therapy teams (will be participating in the September Maine
training) and have been consistently impressed with and
appreciative of this model, which I've also integrated into my own
therapy practice. Of particular interest is the containing double
intervention. You can read an article about this intervention on
the TSI site at www.therapeuticspiral.org.
- Sacred
Trust Betrayed
Retreat for Survivors of Clergy Sexual Abuse
Led by St. Placid Spirituality Center
February 7-9, 2003
Those who experience sexual contact with a clergy person
serving in a pastoral role frequently experience a deep sense of betrayal.
In addition to trauma associated with sexual exploitation, there is the
betrayal by one who represents a trusted institution and who represents God.
This wound does not heal quickly or easily. If you have had this experience
and have suffered in silence, carrying a secret that few persons would
believe or understand, this retreat is for you. In a supportive group
setting you will be able to reflect on your feelings about that experience,
evaluate your present circumstances and consider any options for future
steps for yourself as you seek justice and healing. For women only. The
Center will be closed to other guests. Retreat
& meals--$200; With lodging--$275. (1/2 payment with registration, or
call for arrangements. Ask for Billie; all conversations are confidential.)
Facilitated by Billie Mazzei, M.A. and Sister Dorothy Robinson, OSB. Both
are spiritual directors who have trained with the Reverend Marie Fortune of
the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence in Seattle,
Washington.
