Exploitation of Persons with Disabilities
Note:
AdvocateWeb's focus is on (primarily sexual) abuse/exploitation
perpetrated by professionals in positions of power, authority, or
trust. This abuse spans many different professions, such as medical,
mental health, clergy, counselors, law enforcement, teachers,
coaches, caregivers, etc. We have been doing work recently
with some groups who provide services to persons with disabilities,
and it is evident that some of the abuse that is done to those with
disabilities is ironically done by the professionals who have been
entrusted to help them. Thus there is indeed an overlap in this area
of concern with the concerns of AdvocateWeb. Since we are a
leading resource on the Internet regarding the topic of abuse by
professionals, it is important that we acknowledge abuse of
persons with disabilities as a special topic to not overlook.
So, we will be putting more resources on AdvocateWeb
specifically relating to these issues. If you have a
particular interest in this topic, please contact:
Coordinator of Disability Resources
Wendie Abramson, LMSW
wendie.abramson@advocateweb.org
Terri Stellar (Assistant)
terri.stellar@advocateweb.org
Wendie and Terri will be coordinating
the compilation and upkeep of current
information on the topic of exploitation and abuse of persons with
disabilities.
Email Discussion Group
We have set up an email discussion group for people who are doing
advocacy or research work on this topic. If you would like to
be involved, contact hope@advocateweb.org.
