A Survivor's Perspective:
Understanding Therapy Exploitation
Resources to Help You Through Your Recovery From Exploitation and Negligence by Your Therapist

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RESEARCH ARTICLES
(including case testimony from a victim/survivor of therapy exploitation)

by Kay C.
(see disclaimer at bottom of page)

INTRODUCTION

I am a victim/survivor of therapy exploitation. I would like to share with you a Bibliography of the research articles and/or chapters from certain books which were great resources and beneficial to my recovery. I have divided this Bibliography into topics:

At the beginning of each Bibliography topic, I have provided summaries of my experiences with my former therapist to give you some examples of therapist negligence and exploitation. After three years of working through the pain and confusion, understanding and healing, I won my lawsuit (negligence verdict against Dr. "X" by jury) and State Board action. The Board found that Dr. "X" violated approximately 25 Board Rules. He resigned his license in lieu of adjudication the day before the hearing.

At the end of my relationship with my therapist, I was deeply hurt, confused, betrayed, traumatized and bewildered -- emotionally, psychologically, physically and spiritually. The therapy and relationship experience with Dr. "X" was the most painful time in my life. Even though I sought help with a new therapist, pastors, attorneys, friends and family, I had a need to research, read and understand what happened during the two-year "therapy" with Dr. "X". I began by obtaining the Rules and Regulations of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct by the American Psychological Association.

When I read the principles, rules and ethics pertaining to numerous areas of treatment, such as: (1) boundaries of competence; (2) assessment and treatment; (3) avoiding dual relationships; (4) sexual impropriety and misconduct; (5) failure to consult and/or refer; (6) failure to appropriately terminate; (7) personal problems and conflicts; and (8) recordkeeping -- I was stunned, almost with disbelief, to read how many principles, rules and ethical standards had been violated by Dr. "X" in his therapy treatment and relationship(s) with me. I wondered -- how could he have done the things he did and not done the things he was trained to do? I also wondered -- how did this happen in his therapy with me? What did I do wrong? I needed and wanted to research those topics mentioned above. Even though I did not clinically understand all that I read, some parts of the articles were very helpful during my recovery and made it easier to understand most of the information that my new therapist, attorney and expert were discussing with me.

I began my research by searching the Internet where I found abstracts and some articles. It is helpful to read the abstracts to give you an idea if the article has information that is applicable to your case. I documented the references for the abstracts and obtained some copies of articles from the Internet and other copies by doing research at local universities and medical schools. One could spend years researching all of these topics, and I stopped for awhile. Some of the websites and links to articles have changed since I first began my research and I was not able to provide links to all of the listed articles. I plan to continue my research and update this Bibliography with more articles and web links for AdvocateWeb in order to provide more resources and support to other victims/survivors of therapy exploitation.

I believe that in order to complete the journey of healing from therapy exploitation and abuse, victims need to read and understand what happened to them -- it will give you HOPE and BELIEF IN YOURSELF to read before your eyes what your therapist did or did not do in his/her therapy treatment and relationship with you that hurt you so deeply. It will help you to realize that you did nothing wrong -- you were someone needing help, you trusted and believed your therapist, you were vulnerable -- and your therapist betrayed you and should be held accountable for his/her negligence and exploitation of you.

If you have articles you would like to add to the lists, please feel free to contact me at MKC1kaysie@aol.com.
