TREATMENT EXPLOITATION RECOVERY NETWORK

A SELF-HELP RECOVERY GROUP FOR
ADULT SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND ABUSE
BY MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELORS, PSYCHOTHERAPISTS, AND
OTHER HELPING PROFESSIONALS

This self-help recovery group, organized by and for survivors, supports, informs, and empowers those who are recovering from the effects of sexual exploitation by helping professionals. During self-help meetings, members can share their experiences in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The group explores a range of topics related to the effects of sexual exploitation and ways to recover from it. Through sharing experiences with other survivors, TERN members can: reduce their feelings of isolation and shame, understand that they are not responsible for the abuse, rebuild self-acceptance and self-esteem, gain hope and support for their recovery, and learn about options for taking action against their perpetrator through a variety of avenues. Members can also share information and resources with one another outside of the meetings. This self-help group is not intended as a substitute or alternative to psychotherapy.
